What bothered me about the artist’s talk was the implicit ethic—that the concoction of items and interests one ingests automatically constitute a meaningful (as in valuable, as in good) whole. This is a “shopping cart” method of thought. It conveys that collection is more important than digestion, acquisition more valuable than comprehension.
